It is afternoon and the garden is shaking
two white butterflies ascend against the green
circling one another
twirling ribbons of air.
Sunflower stalks like giants
pull apart from the pole
to which they are tied
white rope squeezes their stem
as they lean into the sun.
Some moments I think very hard
about the way their head hangs
and faces the earth
and their leaves slowly dry into yellow
taking on the sun.
I watch them lightening
as petals flake away
to rot in a pile
where squirrels weave
cracking shells in twilight’s hush.
Though Nature grins at her own undoing
death is nutritious
dripping milk for infant others
to drink, and grow, and die
and never
to end-
